## How Water-Methanol Injection Works

Water-methanol injection (also called water injection, WAES, or WMI) sprays a fine mist of water-methanol mixture into the engine's intake tract. As the mixture evaporates, it absorbs heat from the charge air -- cooling it by up to 60 degC. This is significantly more effective than a conventional intercooler and introduces zero pressure drop.

### Benefits

1. **Power increase (10-25%)**: Cooler, denser charge air means more oxygen per combustion cycle. This allows higher boost pressure and more aggressive ignition timing.
2. **Charge air cooling (up to 60 degC reduction)**: Evaporative cooling is more efficient than air-to-air or air-to-water intercoolers, with no restriction to airflow.
3. **Octane boost**: Methanol has an effective octane rating of ~116. This eliminates knock and allows engines to run optimal timing on regular pump fuel.
4. **Thermal protection**: Reduced combustion temperatures protect pistons, valves, and turbochargers from thermal overload.
5. **Cleaner combustion**: Water-methanol injection reduces carbon deposits on intake valves and combustion chambers.
6. **Fuel savings**: In some applications, the improved combustion efficiency leads to reduced fuel consumption under load.

### Fluid Consumption

Typical consumption is approximately 0.17 litres per minute at full throttle. A standard 3-litre tank provides 250-350 km of range under normal driving conditions. Larger tanks (9.5 l and 26.5 l) are available.
